Learning by experience

Our training courses and seminars cover our three subject areas:

1. Communication & cooperation

2. The development of a culture of innovation

3. Resilience

The training courses/seminars are modular and designed to build on each other in order to bring about a development process in the participants. However, they can also be used as individual seminars. Although seminars focus on knowledge transfer, we also focus on practical participation and learning through experience.

Communication & Cooperation

The seminar approaches the topic of communication through four key questions:

  • What exactly is communication?
  • What prerequisites are necessary for communication to succeed?
  • What happens when communication fails?
  • What are the bases for conducting a conversation?

Participants learn and use basic communication models. The aim is to make them sensitive to their goals and to remain fair and cooperative.

Valuable communication makes a surprising amount possible:

  • It opens people up for new things.
  • It promotes ideas.
  • It boosts knowledge transfer and talent development.
  • It enables solutions and encourages people to embrace change.

Appreciative communication is communication on an equal footing. This makes it far from easy, because it is unambiguous and clear. And it makes it necessary to take a stance. With appreciative communication, I confidently claim to be able to achieve my goals and actively protect my boundaries. At the same time, I strive to express myself in such a way that the other person is not hurt and barriers are broken down rather than built up. Thus I see and appreciate my value and that of my counterpart, balanced against one another.

But how is it possible to communicate appreciatively? How do I create communication processes in such a way that my dialogue partner – but also I myself – experience appreciation, in order to derive the above-mentioned positive effects?

“Appreciative communication” training sensitises the need for a communicative balance between sender and receiver. It highlights the fact that being on an equal footing means putting aside any feelings of arrogance or subordination. It teaches not to create overlaps with conversation partners purely by chance, but to create them in a targeted manner by reflecting on and expanding one’s own opinions as well as those of others.

Conversations in operational situations.

When people talk to each other, they are by no means conducting a conversation. To genuinely “conduct” conversations by and large means managing people. Aside from any functional and hierarchical purposes, the aim of a conversation is to achieve specific goals and objectives. The medium for this is the spoken word.

The seminar enhances/perception of the balance between a goal-oriented steered and cooperative-appreciative conversation. Participants learn the essential techniques for preparing and conducting conversations. They learn to criticise, and to act and react effectively. They train “conducting” conversations in the best sense of the word.

work on and with concrete conversation situations in a corporate context

To communicate is to exchange ideas. To communicate appreciatively is to conduct this exchange on the basis of formulated guidelines and standards.

Those who communicates appreciatively create transparency and make their behaviour quantifiable. This creates credibility and trust. The result is an atmosphere that motivates teams, inspires customer and supplier loyalty and makes companies distinctive.

The seminar is aimed at executives who want to integrate values into communication structures in a targeted fashion.

  • It makes clear how values create personality and improve communication – but can also hinder it
  • It shows how values can be jointly developed and introduced into everyday operational situations.
  • It gives insight into the possibilities of creating a communicative framework.
  • It shows how and where values can be documented and integrated into company structures.
  • There are suggestions for bringing values to “life”, so they can be internalised to give a sense of identity and externalised to boost public image.

The aim of the seminar is to present the positive power of value-conscious communication in a practical way: for individual potentials and collective top performance.

Communication is much more than talking to each other. It is based on mutual exchange, cooperation and understanding. Words and content form as much a part of this as tone of voice, posture or environment.

In the seminar, the participants learn the factors of good communication and cooperation. They are confronted with a wide range of communication situations and train themselves in the art of conversation, consciously but nevertheless in a spirit of partnership.

The aim of the seminar is not to show you how to avoid conflicts at any cost – fearfully, evasively and defensively. However, It is also not to encourage you to carry out conflicts with destructive energy – abusively, disparagingly and by imposing your own “correct” version.

Rather, it is about giving you tools to help you deal actively and constructively with conflicts in professional life. Above all, it is about making you realising that you are the one who needs to change something. And even when you are totally convinced that others should act – if you are dissatisfied with a situation, it is the Way of St. James to say: I will become active!

It is an undisputed fact that communication is a key factor for leadership. Many people find it hard to believe that non-verbal communication, so-called talk moves, play the most important role. In fact, our body speaks volumes. It often exposes far more than we say, or do not say, with our voice.

In the training course you will learn to read and interpret the body language of your opponent better. You will be sensitive to non-verbal signals from your colleagues and you will be able to recognise your emotions and attitudes more easily – and react to them!

The interaction between inner and outer viewpoints is also not to be underestimated. Therefore, in your role as a leader, you are training to exchange body-language supremacy or subordination in favour of coherent authority. Learn how to expand your individual expression repertoire, to use your own body language as a means to form relationships, to be “clear” both internally and externally – and thereby give your authenticity effective expression.

The four topic areas of the training course are:

  • Self and perception: Your habitual body language and what it tells you about yourself
  • An additional source of information: Body language as support for conversation situations
  • The body language of power: talk moves on a leadership level
  • Influence: Using talk moves to influence one’s own perceptions, feelings, and thinking

Module 1: Manage and develop yourself
Module 2: Managing employees and developing their potential

OBJECTIVES:

  • Recognising one’s own and other people’s strengths
  • Creating free space/room to manoeuvre in daily operational life
  • Time to yourself, time to think, time to let your thoughts run free, time for new things
  • Understand how potential develops
  • Understand how changes succeed

Demands in many areas of society – especially in professional life – are increasing. At the same time, strain, pressure and stress are growing.

Where is the space for the key competence of creativity? Where is the time for creative thinking and action in the midst of urgent daily business? And does the price of professional success really have to be so high that it leads to a feeling of being “driven”? Is it possible, or rather how is it possible to lead a productive, economically successful life and to draw the strength for it from inner peace and serenity?

These are the questions we deal with in two interactive modules. We find the answers on two different levels:

The personal level – managing yourself and developing your own potential
The level of employees – managing staff and developing other people’s potential

In addition to the fundamentals of communication, cooperation and leadership, both levels are based on the findings of creativity and brain research. These are two closely interrelated disciplines. There is enough evidence from both of them to suggest that the key to the development of potentials is, above all, the targeted creation of framework conditions and an inspiring relationship culture.

To be creative means to think and to act in unfamiliar ways. Every person has the potential to do so, because creativity is learnable.

The seminar teaches techniques to discover creative ideas and solutions. The participants learn to create associations, use the resulting images and transfer them to the respective task. The aim is to promote the creative possibilities of the participants and to train them in a receptive way.

The “Storytelling” seminar shows where stories and fairy tales can make the company’s day easier and more “note-worthy”. It allows the participants to try out different narrative methods and to train them in a more receptive way: Individual words, numbers and signs become images and comparisons. Information and image chains can be “deconstructed” or be understood as a “whole” at will.

The aim is to make the participants aware of their communicative possibilities and the charm of well-told stories.

Resilience

Of course the daily routine will also carry on without me. Of course there is pressure that affects me – professionally as well as privately. And of course, to a large extent, that’s just part of life. Sometimes I can deal with it well and sometimes less well. Sometimes I keep my head up and can adjust myself constructively and positively. And other times – perhaps even for a few days or even weeks and months – I fall into a trough of gloomy thoughts, bury my head in the sand, and make it difficult for myself to see the light the end of the tunnel.

Stress and mental lows are an important and even vital fuel for a fulfilling life. The principle of opposites applies: how, for example, would we be able to grasp happiness if we did not know grief? This knowledge alone makes it much easier for many people to deal with a downward wave and consciously “ride” it. In addition, there are a few tools to make us aware of how we can pull our heads out of the sand again and charge our batteries at the same time. In the training course “A moment to myself”, we are concerned with the various individual charge outlets, both big and small, that everyday life provides us with. How to notice them, establish them and use them consciously as small time-outs is the core of the training.

Letting go has two very opposed aspects: on the one hand, that of loss and grief for what was. The other aspect is freedom: the gaze is directed towards the new. For example, think of helium-filled balloons at the fairground or the typical releasing of balloons at a baptism or wedding. On the one hand, it is pleasing to watch the balloon ascend into the sky. It bears witness to the joy of life, development and freedom. However, many children burst into tears as soon as they have released the balloon and let go of the thread that was holding it fast. Both scenes represent letting go. Often, it is “only” a matter of what perspective we take. Why should we let go of something we have loved? On the other hand, how long should we hold onto something that is sapping our strength by evoking negative feelings in us? When is it the right time? When is it worth fighting for a change, and when does the fight inevitably lead to a dead end or even to the feared powerlessness?

Letting go is revealed in the area of tension between two very important motivating forces of human life: preservation and maintenance, and action and change

To use these forces in themselves is the subject of our training. Change it, love it, leave it – goes the saying in management. What is your strategy – depending on the situation, power relations and your own energy? The training course helps you to find out exactly that, to reflect on it and to redefine it for yourself, again and again.

“You just have to say no!” – this is a frequently repeated contemporary saying. Defining your boundaries by saying no seems to be the key to one’s own delimitation. But is this really the case? What happens to my interlocutor and me when I put up a barrier in front of him or her? …. put up a stop sign? … make clear what is definitely NOT going to happen now? The advice to delimit by saying no is dangerous. Of course, I should protect my boundaries – extremely vigorously! However, for this I need a high degree of inner strength and must be able to live with coming up against strong opposition. For those who can do so and feel comfortable with it, we recommend saying no. Likewise, those who have no problem when boundaries arise not only externally, but in one’s own head.

This training is about the range of possibilities to say no – as far as possible without using the actual word no. It is about knowing and protecting one’s own boundaries, while at the same time opening up and winning over my counterpart with cooperation and alternative thinking. The point is to create the fresh air, time and space for thinking outside the box without “draining” my interlocutor. It is about opening up my own path by guiding my interlocutors and myself through questions and striking up a path through common ground. “The journey is the destination” aptly sums this up.

Trapped in day-to-day business, organising, coordinating and handling. The daily to-do list just doesn’t get any shorter. One appointment on the tail end of another, the phone constantly ringing, and every couple of minutes someone comes in and “interferes”. The employees pull you one way with their comprehensible needs and legitimate demands, and the bosses pull you the other way with their requirements and time pressure. Where on earth is the space for you to really make a meaningful contribution to the company? Where is the time for reflection, prioritisation and planning? And does the price of professional success really have to be so high that it leads to a feeling of being “driven”? Is it possible, or rather how is it possible to lead a productive, economically successful life and to draw the strength for it from inner peace and serenity?

Training for self-management and self-development does not form part of classical self-management training. There are no off-the-shelf tips on how to clean up your desk, create meaningful checklists, or make your dealings manageable and controllable over time. Rather, it looks at what YOU specifically need to be able to manage and develop yourself. That is to say, this can really vary a great deal from one person to the next. Thus you do not take a toolbox away with you from this training, but rather ideas specifically developed by you yourself on how to enjoy doing what you like doing and what you find easy, and how you can deliberately delegate to others what is hard for you, without feeling guilty about it. You learn to prioritise, but not just on the basis of importance and urgency, but with a view to your own inner skills that give you your greatest leverage. This may remind you of the Pareto Principle!
